The Future of Scarborough Transit: Debate on Proposed LRT and Subway Replacements for the SRT

The existing Scarborough RT from Kennedy station to the McCowan SRT stop will be in need of replacement by 2015. A standing plan originally included in the 2007 Transit City proposal was to replace the SRT with new Light Rapid Transit which would run along the same route, extended with two new stations to reach Sheppard Avenue East and Markham.

However since spring 2013, some councillors with support of the mayor have brought forward a plan to extend the Bloor-Danforth subway line from Kennedy station to Sheppard and McCowan instead, re-routing the line underneath McCowan Road and abandoning the SRT line and stations. Backers of this proposal claim to have the support of most Scarborough residents, but questions have been raised as to which plan better serves us.
