YourVoice: Future of Transit in the GTA

On Tuesday, March 22, join us at Nelson Mandela Park Public School for a public consultation on the future of transit in the GTA jointly hosted by the City of Toronto, Metrolinx and the TTC.

We will first meet up at 5:30pm at Paintbox Bistro for a pre-event chat (optional). This gives members a chance to discuss the topic of the consultation, share ideas and expectations, network, and grab a quick bite before the consultation!

We will then head over to the event venue for the consultation, where we will learn about:

-  SmartTrack - integrating SmartTrack and GO Regional Express Rail to improve transit across Toronto

-  Relief Line - the preferred corridor connecting the Bloor-Danforth Subway to Downtown

-  Scarborough Subway Extension - plans for optimized transit in Scarborough

-  Electrified GO Service - electrification of rail corridors to enable more frequent and faster train service

-  New GO Stations - opportunities for new GO stations so more people can access transit

-  Integrated Transit Fares - to make switching between transit systems simple and hassle-free

AGENDA

YourVoice: Community Safety and Policing Consultation

CivicMuslims is officially launching our YourVoice initiative!

YourVoice is your opportunity to be heard at town halls, forums, and consultations on local civic issues. Every event focuses on a specific timely issue. New to the issue? We got you covered. Prior to every event, CivicMuslims meets up to share relevant resources and get you up to speed through meaningful discussion. This also allows us to network and grab a bite prior to the consultation or public forum.

On Thursday March 10, 2016, join CivicMuslims at YMCA, 20 Grosvenor St for the Police Services and Community Safety consultation, hosted by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services of Ontario.

Join us as we discuss various important topics, such as:

  • ensuring police oversight bodies have clear mandates
  • improving interactions between the police and people with mental health or addiction issues
  • clarifying the duties of police officers and modernising police recruitment and training programs
  • creating a framework for police relations with First Nations
  • improving police accountability and governance of police services boards

ExperienceX: Astronomy’s Golden Age

CivicMuslims presents ExperienceX, our flagship social brand where you get to enjoy unique experiences while connecting with other members. Join us for our first ExperienceX event and Experience Astronomy’s Golden Age. 100% of the proceeds from ticket sales is being donated to Red Cross Canada by the University of Toronto in aid of Syrian refugees.

Explore the remarkable astronomical ideas of the Islamic Golden Age and the modern discoveries to which they are connected in this special series of shows presented live by U of T astronomers. Journey through the cosmos to see a binary star set on a distant exoplanet and a star explode as a supernova—and journey back in time to the Big Bang and the birth of the Universe. Think of the planetarium as an interactive movie theatre where the screen is a dome on which any part of the cosmos is projected.

This Planetarium show in Aid of Syrian Refugees is inspired by the idea that all of humanity is #UnitedByTheStars. The shows are an initiative of the U of T Graduate Astronomy Students Association, supported by the Department of Astronomy and Astrophysics and the Dunlap Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics, University of Toronto.

Program

Dinner (optional): 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM

Planetarium show: 8:00 PM - 9:00 PM

We’ve made a group reservation for dinner at Valens restaurant at 6 PM. After dinner, we will walk over (10-minute walk) to the Planetarium for the show at 8 PM. Dinner is pay-your-own way and is optional. You can meet us at the Planetarium if you want to just catch the show.
